Eric Clapton NEVER played a cover of this. Firstly, Eric Clapton is a blues artist (and a great one at that nonetheless) - but this is not a blues song, so that means it's unlikely he will ever cover it. Secondly, listen to the original Mason Williams recordings and you will find out which version is credited to Eric Clapton...

Actually, he wasn't just bending the strings behind the nut. He bent the entire guitar neck. He braces his right hand on the body for support and then pushes the neck forward from behind the headstock, creating a sort of tremolo effect.
Guitar necks are made to bend and warp a bit, but I wouldn't recommend using this technique if you don't have several backup guitars or a close friend in the luthier business.

i wouldn't be surprised if this was a custom guitar with a special kind of wood or something and some bendable but strong material inside of the wood of the neck for support

i do it all the time and it doesnt do much to the guitar itself. ur not going for a 45 degree angle, its just a slight bend. The guitar can take it and u wont break it (didnt mean to make it rhyme but it sounds good).

You can bend the neck of almost any guitar including electrics that's just how they're built.
Sorry to disagree Speedy1388. To hear you say that Tommy is kinda talented without musicianship is really strange . He chooses to play in that open style but I have heard him do other styles and he is a master guitar player on both acoustic and electric. He also has a vast musical knowledge.
